How to Create a Home Fit for Entertaining

From family gatherings to dinner parties, home entertaining is a priority for many. Here are a few ways to make your home an inviting and enjoyable space for guests, whatever the occasion.

A good first impression

The entrance to your home is the first thing your guests will see, so make sure it’s a warm and inviting space to best welcome them in. Arriving guests will appreciate a mirror placed near the front door so they can check their appearance, and this also has the added benefit of making your space appear larger.

“Where should I put my coat?” is a question guests often find themselves asking, so ensure you have plenty storage space for extra coats, as well as somewhere for them to keep their shoes.

Setting the tone

Good lighting is key to setting the right atmosphere, whether you're hosting guests or relaxing alone. Using lamps rather than overhead lighting can create a soft glow perfect for an evening event, or for a more delicate touch, an elegant candelabra can be the perfect centrepiece for your dinner table.

For colder evenings, a lit fireplace is a great way to create a cosy and seasonal feel, as well as giving guests a focal point to gather around.

In the kitchen

Bar stools are a great way to keep guests comfortable in the kitchen whilst you’re preparing food, helping you to be a good cook and attentive host at the same time.

If you entertain guests regularly, a home bar can be a worthwhile investment. Keeping drink options visible allows guests to help themselves as they please, freeing you up for other hosting duties.

Functional furniture

Having guests over can often require more seating than you usually have available, but there’s no need to take up valuable storage space with bulky chairs. Options such as stackable stools, beanbags and cushions are a convenient and versatile way to accommodate guests, and can easily be pushed to one side when no longer required.

Outdoors

Weather can be unpredictable, and a pergola, patio umbrella or retractable awning are great ways to keep guests dry in the event of a surprise shower, or cool at the height of summer.

Insects can feel like an unavoidable annoyance, but a few strategically placed citronella candles will help keep your party free from unwelcome guests.

For colder evenings a patio heater can provide some much needed warmth, and for a sense of occasion a firepit can be a great place for guests to hang out and socialise.

Stress-free clean up

Accidents do happen, so for areas where food and drink will be served, consider having tiled or sealed wooden flooring for a wipe clean finish. A large and easily accessible bin is also a good idea for guests to dispose of their own rubbish and to help you keep the space clutter-free.
